The GREAT Coaching Framework for Leaders
Sep 04, 2025Most Leaders Think They’re Coaching… But They’re Not
They're really advising, problem-solving, or giving pep talks.
All useful in the right moment… but not true coaching.
Coaching is about unlocking insight, not handing over answers.
And the best part? You don’t need to be a certified coach to do it well. You just need a solid framework.
Meet the GREAT Coaching Framework
This simple 5-step tool helps you stay curious, build ownership, and guide meaningful growth without over-functioning for your team.
G – Goal
What does success look like in this situation?
Start here. Even if they don’t know yet, this brings clarity and purpose to the conversation.
R – Reality
What’s happening right now?
Explore the current state with curiosity. Ask things like:
-
“What have you already tried?”
-
“What’s getting in the way?”
E – Explore Options
What else could you try?
Resist the urge to give answers. Instead, help them think bigger:
-
“What’s another approach?”
-
“What would you do if you weren’t stuck?”
A – Action
What’s your next move?
Coaching without action is just a nice chat. Get clear:
-
“What will you do, by when?”
T – Track
How will you stay accountable?
This is where real change sticks. Don’t skip it.
💡 Quick Coaching Tip 💡
Next time someone brings you a problem, try asking:
-
“What have you already tried?”
-
“What outcome are you hoping for?”
-
“What’s one next step you could take?”
Small questions = big leadership ripple effects.
